Winterham Plantation, a Richmond Virginia bed and breakfast, is a beautifully restored antebellum Italianate mansion, with the elegance of Virginia's historic grandeur, as well as the convenience of all modern amenities. This National Register Virginia Landmark was built around 1855 by John Garland Jefferson, a cousin of President Thomas Jefferson. Located in the heart of rural Amelia County (Greater Richmond Virginia), Winterham is the perfect setting for an unforgettable country vacation, business retreat or wedding reception.
Civil war buffs also love to stay here, because Winterham lies at the epicenter of Lee's retreat route from Petersburg to Appomattox, near the last major battlefield of the conflict, Sailor's Creek in western Amelia Co.. A new state visitors' center will be completed there this summer. Winterham served as a Confederate hospital, and the son of the family, 17 yr. old Thomas Garland Jefferson, died from battle wounds sustained at Newmarket. He is the VMI icon whose photo appears in all of their literature. The New Market Cadet Room is themed in his honor, and decorated with military and 19th century prints prints.
Looking for a romantic vacation getaway? Make it the Jefferson Suite at Winterham Plantation Bed and Breakfast. This spacious two-room suite, with its stunning lake view, is the perfect mix of old and new. The master bedroom includes a queen-sized hand-carved canopy bed and a sitting area furnished with fine antiques. The adjoining sitting room has a double bed and concealed cable television. Both rooms are warmed by romantic remote-controlled gas-log fireplaces. A luxurious private bath completes the suite with twin pedestal sinks, French bidet, a two-person shower/steam room, and the ultimate in relaxation, an Ultrabath Thermo-masseur tub (air jet jacuzzi). A word about the owners, the restoration and the furnishings: Gary and Kathy Hadfield restored Winterham Plantation then opened it for business in 2003. The house had lain gutted and shuttered for over 20 years. Under the supervision of Virginia Commonwealth and Federal historic preservation officers, Winterham was carefully restored to its former glory. Now it is a new turn-key home in an old shell. The process took three years, under the expert direction and design of Bob Steele (BOB Architects of Richmond). The major challenge was to excavate for a new home under the old home in order to provide modern living space, now The Garden Terrace Suite--and at the same time create our own private apartment, The Col. Booker Studio, without altering the look of the historic home above it. Winterham also desparately needed a large equipment room for HVAC and water treatment. Only materials and fixtures of the highest quality were selected. Winterham is the third home the Hadfields have placed on the National Register, including their private residence, Dykeland, a few miles away from Winterham, and finally a pioneer home in Provo, Utah.
Then there are the furnishings. This is the only time in his married life Gary had asked Kathy to shop. Kathy scoured antique stores for period and reproduction furnishings and also decided to open her own art gallery at Winterham, Hadfield Fine Arts, LTD, Gary is a retired MD medical school professor (neuropathologist). While presenting his research around the world, Kathy would go with him and spend her time in the art galleries and flea markets looking for fine art. She gained a keen eye for paintings while working for Spainierman Art Gallery in Manhattan and pursuing graduate courses in art history at Coumbia University.. There are over 500 pieces of framed art hanging on the walls at Winterham. This extensive collection is an added treat for our guests to enjoy. We have endeavored to create an upscale venue--elegant, but with a homey and relaxed atmosphere and feel, "your home away from home."
The Hadfields love to host their B&B, wedding and event guests. Kathy lovingly prepares gourmet breakfasts, and we enjoy visiting with our visitors immensely. Gary and Kathy have four married children and 21 grandchildren. They were raised in Utah, trained and worked in New York City and have lived in Virginia for the past 40 years.
